Top Ten Furnace Problems:

  1. 1: Thermostat issues: Is your thermostat set properly and calling for heat. If it has a battery, has the battery been changed recently? If you have a programmable thermostat, review it's programming to ensure that your thermostat is calling for heat.
  2. 2: Fuel: Is you gas supply turned on? Have you paid you gas bill lately? Make sure that a manual gas shut-off valve is note turned off between the meter and your gas furnace.
  3. 3: Power: Your gas furnace needs power to operate. Is the breaker and the emergency switch for your gas furnace turned on. There is often and thermal fuse above the furnace in the mechanical space: is that properly in place?
  4. 4: Ignition failure: If you have an older furnace you probably have a pilot light. Make sure that the pilot is lit. If you have electronic ignition, it is probably either an intermittent pilot, or a hot surface ignition system.
  5. 5: Combustion air and venting: If you have an older non-condensing furnace, you have a chimney or b-vent system that terminates through the roof. All the venting needs to be properly secure and free of corrosion. If you have a condensing furnace, your system probably has a plastic venting system including an air intake. Make sure that the vent and air intake is free of obstructions, supported properly, and does not have any accumulated condensation that can obstruct airflow.
  6. 6: Blower motor: Does your furnace light, but the blower does not come on? Perhaps you have a failed blower motor or fan switch.
  7. 7: Dirty filters. This is really common and can cause component failures and shorten the life of your furnace. It is critical that you change your air filters at least once or twice every year.
  8. 8: Other airflow problems: make sure that your ductwork is secure and well sealed. Make sure that most grills and registers throughout your conditioned space are open and free of obstructions.
  9. 9: Condensation or moisture where is does not belong. If you have a condensing furnace, if produces water as a byproduct of combustion. If this is accumulating in the vent system, or not draining properly it can cause intermittent failures and damage to your home.
  10. 10: Age or maintenance related failures indicating its time for a new unit: Your gas furnace heat exchanger protects your family from dangerous carbon monoxide so it must be checked to ensure that it is sound and safe. If any corrosion or checks are observed then it's time for a new furnace.

If we find your furnace needs major repairs, of if its is more than 12 years old, we'll likely recommend you consider upgrading to a new Armstrong furnace. Click here for more details.
