Top Ten Central Air Conditioning Problems:

  1. 1: Thermostat issues: Is your thermostat set properly and calling for air conditioning? If it has a battery, has the battery been changed recently? If you have a programmable thermostat, review it's programming to ensure that your thermostat is calling for AC.
  2. 2: Power: Is the breaker and the outdoor disconnect for your outdoor unit turned on? Is the system switch in near the indoor unit (gas furnace or air handler) turned on? There is often and thermal fuse above the furnace in the mechanical space: is that properly in place?
  3. 3: Dirty indoor filters. This is really common and can cause component failures and shorten the life of your AC system. Is your outdoor unit is operating but the indoor coil is icing up, check the filters now and replace them it they're disposable.
  4. 4:Indoor airflow: Make sure that your ductwork is secure and well sealed and that most grills and registers throughout your conditioned space are open and free of obstructions.
  5. 5: Outdoor unit coil: The outdoor unit coil must be clean and free of obstructions. If it is dirty or damaged your AC system will not cool properly.
  6. 6: Indoor blower motor: Does your outdoor unit operate but the indoor blower does not come on? Perhaps you have a failed blower motor or fan switch.
  7. 7: Outdoor unit blower motor: If you compressor is running but your outdoor fan isn't thats a problem. It will result in very poor performance and may cause other system damage.
  8. 8: Refrigerant leaks or damaged refrigerant piping: Refrigerant loss will reduce system capacity over time. Is you system running, but not cooling properly. You could have a refrigerant problem.
  9. 9: Condensation or moisture where is does not belong. A critical part of air conditioning is humidity control. Water is produced as a byproduct of AC operation. If water is accumulating below the indoor unit, or not draining properly it can cause intermittent failures and damage to your home.
  10. 10: Age or maintenance related failures indicating its time for a new unit: Your compressor is the heart of your system. If it is drawing more power and not cooling as well it may be on the way out. Other components can wear over time including the outdoor unit contractor or system capacitors that can be replace but might indicate it's time for a new more efficient AC system.
